GET FAMILIAR WITH THE AFC WORLD.
WHAT IS AN AFC?
An AFC is an adult foster care service that provides care 24 hours a day, seven days a week for adults with intellectual, mental, or physical disabilities. The level of care depends on the individuals living at the AFC, but it is essential to distinguish that an AFC is not the same as full-time nursing care.
Typically, the staff of an AFC helps their residents with functions such as daily dispersal of prescriptions or everyday tasks like getting dressed or basic hygiene.
The adults who live in AFC homes are unique in their individual diagnoses and needs. Still, they all share that they cannot live alone and therefore benefit from the personal care, protection, and supervision that their group living situation provides.
HOW DO I KNOW IF AN AFC IS RIGHT FOR ME AND MY LOVED ONE?
As the guardian of an adult with special needs, planning for long-term care can be daunting. Here are several of the reasons that an AFC is an excellent option to research, as well as important questions to ask:
1.) COMMUNITY INTEGRATION – be sure to ask what kind of
community integration the homes have. Do they attend community events, volunteer in the community, and that are safe?
2.) LOCATION – Where are the homes located? Are they located in neighborhoods that foster community and that are safe?
3.) FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Are the homes clean, in good repair, accessible for the needs of the individual (handicap accessible, close to a bus line etc.)
4.) STAFF TURNOVER – Is staffing consistent or are there a lot of new staff coming and going? Turnover is hard on individuals.
5.) COMPLIANCE – Are they in compliance with Michigan regulatory rules. Check the LARA website here.
